Workshop: Andrew Malone

February 2016

FRANK is pleased to be offering a practical collage-making workshop with artist Andrew Malone at the gallery on Friday 15th April from 6–8 pm.

Andrew Malone

The two hour workshop consists of individual tuition and includes all materials, equipment and a glass of wine. Andrew will use and provide many vintage paper elements such as stamps, matchboxes and memorabilia.

Andrew Malone’s work combines elements from vintage books, maps and matchboxes and explores ideas about nature, journeys, migration and sense of place.

Andrew has a strong attachment to the natural world and a nostalgia for how this interest started for him. The books and maps he uses to make the work come from a more innocent age when he would pore over them by night and be out in the countryside looking for their contents by day. Andrew’s work is a continuation of that obsession with collecting, cataloguing and observing.

Andrew Malone lives and works in Whitstable. Kent and is Chair of the Whitstable Biennale. He studied Sculpture at Canterbury College of Art and Central St Martins in the 1980s. He is Course Leader and Associate Head of School at the University for the Creative Arts and teaches masterclasses and family workshops at the Royal Academy  of Arts, London and the Turner Contemporary in Margate.

He has exhibited at Book Fairs at the ICA, Whitechapel Gallery, Bristol, Leeds, Russia, Hungary, Italy, Denmark and Spain. His work can be seen at Much Ado Books in Sussex, Turner Contemporary in Margate, Whitstable Biennale, Scottish Poetry Library, Frank in Whitstable, Pinkfoot Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, Bookmarc (Marc Jacobs), Book Art Bookshop, London, Minnesota Centre for Book Arts and Boekie Woekie in Amsterdam.

Andrew has work in the Tate Britain collection and many collections in the UK, Europe, Russia, USA, Australia and New Zealand. This autumn he created an exhibition to celebrate 100 years of Ladybird books for the Sheffield International Book Prize.
